And I will walk 500 miles…. (The Proclaimers)

Oh those bespectacled Scottish lads have not walked the Camino otherwise they would never walk 500 more!
Yes today was THE day where 2 young and hopeful Aussies (yes that is me and Tan) put one foot in front of the other and walked 27km to Roncesvalles….crossing into Spain.

Sounds lovely, quaint, charming, idyllic and easy in your armchair there but let me tell you today was extremely hard. We were promised a day of sunshine, we got 3 hours of sun and wind then 5 hours of rain, hail and wind. Lovely day for a stroll….not.

The first 17km was up hill. Well we were crossing the Pyrenees.  Then 5km flat, well that is what we were told but through the thick fog on the top, we were unsure about that fact. The last 5km was down hill on a gorgeous country path and the sun was shining now. This was my worse nightmare as the path was slippery and extremely muddy due to all the rain and hail we had during the day. I fell to one knee once and slid many, many times.

The great thing is, it is said that if you can survive the first day, you should be able to survive the whole Camino. So it is all looking good.

  1. Oh noooooooo! Look at all that mud!!!
Do you think it will dry out by Friday? Of course there could be more rain … And hail?
Congratulations to you both – well done!
It will be easy from now on 🙂

    • Hello Chelle,
I am so pleased to catch up with you. You both are doing so well. Sorry about the weather but the sun shines in your being, dear girl, and you will win. Don’t try to bring any crates of wine with you.
Looking forward to your next leg. Love from the Scotts.

    • Hi Lene
It was sooo much better today. Overcast but no rain 🙂 It is suppose to be sunny for the next 3 days, so all the mud should be dried up by then, and maybe you will have a view as well. The visibility at the top for us was around 50mtrs. A bit scary really but all done now.
Good luck on your first day 🙂
      Michelle.

      • I love your optimism, thank you for all those encouraging words. If it is clear on top I will take a photo especially for you.
Great that you had a sunny day today. That will make you feel a lot better.

    • It was great to get to the first hostel yesterday but I had little energy for anything else. Luckily they had a couple of ladies who wash our extremely muddy pants for 2.70 Euro. A bargain 🙂

  2. Take care with that knee chelle – at least you’re both smiling ( for the camera and looking into the sun!!) xx Trace

  3. Well done! Wow, quite the first day — rain AND hail. Enjoy the hopefully easier day tomorrow and don’t forget to take the obligatory photo in front of the sign as you leave Roncesvalles. 😉

  4. Well done girls. You’ve tackled all the hard stuff on the first day and you’re still powering on! Hope your knee is ok Michelle. Hope you are sleeping well too. Blessings xo

  5. What a start girls! That wasn’t part of the master plan I’m sure! You two are amazing 🙂 I do hope day two has been far kinder to you. xx

  6. Well done Michelle and friend – you have had all types of weather to contend with but you are still going and appear to be happy doing so!!!!!
